[MUSIC PLAYING] JILL MITCHELL: My name is Jill Mitchell, and I'm a professor of accounting at Northern Virginia Community College. I went to the University of Georgia, studied business, then went to the University of Virginia for my master's in accountancy. I worked for EY, started my career there, then I transitioned to higher ed.
And here at Nova, in order to teach online you have to keep up with your professional development in online teaching. So that's initially what drew me to George Mason University was the graduate certificate in e-learning. Once I was in that program, I developed a passion for instructional design and decided to continue on into the master's program.
I never felt alone. We always just had this sense of connection in the online courses in the program. The online courses are way more than just logging into Zoom, and talk, and listening to a lecture from the professors. The professors demonstrate good instructional design whether you were sitting in a classroom face-to-face or online.
They make the online experience engaging by developing creative learning experiences and opportunities for you to connect with the professor. I was drawn to George Mason because of the reputation in the DC metro area, but it was really the reputation of the faculty members. They are leading designers, they are leading researchers in practice, combined with research. They have a great reputation. Not just in our area, but nationally. And so the opportunity to work with them based on their reputation is really what drew me to George Mason over other programs.
Not only do they have this great understanding of learning science theory, they're also really innovative in exploring how we can incorporate technology in learning. This is a flexible program for working professionals to really enhance their instructional design skills. Or for somebody like me to learn instructional design for the first time. You have the opportunity to work with your peers in the program to practice what you've learned, to implement, to design, and create solutions to real learning problems, and can manage the entire design process.
My journey after completing the program really gave me the confidence to explore and design meaningful learning experiences for my accounting students. It gave me the confidence to share my instructional design expertise with accounting educators across the country at conferences, and giving webinars. You don't need to be in a classroom to learn. And that was I think one of the biggest takeaways for me. Being an online student made me a much better online teacher.
